View Full Version : Chlorine Burns (Ouch!)

Hi all,

have a 16'x10' splasher pool enclosed within a 20'x12' tarpaulin tent :)

Problem is that the pool water is being evaporated (86-92 degrees) :)
and condensing on walls/roof of tent and falling as concentrated chlorine rain :(

A friend suffered quite severe burns whilst laying the decking around the pool
his clothing got damp from the "rain" which dried and left chlorine powder in contact with his skin.....Ouch!!

SO... Should i be considering using Bromine???
OR... giving up on the all year pool idea? (please say "dont give up")

Promised Daughter swimming on xmas day!

cheers,
Laura.

Hi Laura,

I'm not sure you're going to be able to defy the laws of physics in this instance.

The only thing I can think of is to try to find some way of reducing loss through evapouration when the pool is not in use. Do you have a cover for the pool? In addition to the solar cover I use when the sun is out, I bought some polyfoam insulation boards 8' x 2' which float nicely on top of the solar cover and have greatly improved insulation and water loss. They're a bit of a faff to remove and store when the pool is in use but they're worth it. Alternatively, just a huge sheet of builders polythene draped over the pool might also help, if the pool is in a tent it'll take longer for the sheet to deteriorate through exposure to UV rays.

Trying to double skin the inside of the tent with a gap between might also help. The theory being that most of the condensation will form on the outside canvass and drip/run down the outside of the inner skin. It will still have to go somewhere though.

As for Bromine - I'll leave that question to the experts.

Probably not much help but as someone who opens our outside pool for New Year's Eve I know it's worth trying to solve the problems :) .

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for ideas, did consider extra cover to prevent evaporation but would be left with the same, albeit reduced problem when pool is uncovered/in use.

Like the idea of adding a second skin to the tent, thinking, maybe if the roof of tent was lined with polystyrene sheets and a gap left between them and tarpaulin with some ventilation, maybe the answer?!?

Also considering having warm air central heating channeled into tent, been a bit chilly when getting out of water lately :D

Not had chance to research the bromine option yet..........Anyone??? :)

Hope the New Years Pool Party goes well ;)

Cheers,
Laura.

Laura hiya

i have a 10 foot round easy up pool in a fully covered gizbo the pool is a constant 35 oC !

I cover it with a solar cover and when the pool is not in use the is no condensaiton at all and when i take the cover off yes there is a lot of steam coming off the pool and it gets really foggy ! :D but we have never had and burns from the chemicals

Im not a expert on this but are you useing to much chlorine in the pool ?

I knlow what you been about getting out of the pool on these cold days its freezing

Hope this may be of some use

Hi Martin,

Mmmmmm 35c Nice ;)

I should have been more specific in my original post, the burns were due to:

"A friend suffered quite severe burns whilst laying the decking around the pool his clothing got damp from the "rain" which dried and left chlorine powder in contact with his skin.....Ouch!!"

Left me worried about clothing, towels etc getting damp and causing the same problem my deck laying friend suffered.

Should have said he was exposed to prolonged exposure whilst clothed and working/sweating due to heat inside the tent, with hindsight I probably dont have anything to worry about?!? Maybe build up of chlorine deposits on the decking? Sore feet? Regular rinse should solve that prob?!? Sorry, but typing as i think :)

I do check chlorine levels every two days, nearly always on the low side of ok.

RE: the chill of leaving the pool :D also considering one of these.Mmmmm Warmth (http://home.btconnect.com/ajsweb/patio-heater/)

Cheers,
Laura.

Nice heater !

I spend enough on electric heating the pool os i will have to stay cold :)

but i now have a big wollen gown to wear when i get out !!!

Use a solar cover when the pool is not in use and the condensation comes down a lot. You are probably lucky if you use your pool 1 hour per day so covering it for the other 23 hours will greatly reduce the evaporation and heat loss.

Hi alanh,
Sorted!!! using 6 sheets of 8'x4'x2" polystyrene as the filling in a sandwich of two sheets of tarpaulin, folds up and back against the side of tent, in a Z shape. Heat loss is minimal and only takes a few seconds to cover/uncover. Added windows/vents to tent covered with flyscreen, no bugs, very little steam and no condensation :D Been hard work, lots of £££
and worth every penny ;)
