View Full Version : Pool Paint?

Hi,
firstly..I'm new to the forum, and I guess the forum is fairly new? Great to see that pools are getting ever popular in the UK and we no longer have to feel alone in learning the ropes!
Anyhow, does anyone have experience of pool paints for concrete pools? I cannot afford to fully tile (quoted around £4K and I don't have the time to do it myself) and thought repainting would be a good option.
What prep is needed (the surface is sound, but looking a bit jaded). How long does a paint finish last? Is it a DIY-able job?
Thanks,
Mick

Thanks Laura,
I seemed to miss that on all the searches I did. I'll get planning for early next year :)

Hi Mick,
I have looked at the link Laura sent you, it tends to deal with water based paint. If you want a more hard wearing finish, you may want to consider chlorine rubber paint. Its around the same price as water based, but in my experiance last twice as long. A couple of points to note with painting pools are that water based & chlorine paints don't mix, so you cant go over one with the other with great success, and a marblelite/pacelite rendered pool should not be painted due to the lack of adhesion to the normally water proof nature of the surface.
I will put pool paints and loads of info on my site this winter, we have not done so to date due to the problems with parcel carriers dropping the tins and damaging/splitting/spilling the contents.
The price will be arounf £60 per 5l tin.
Hope this helps
All the best

Glan,
how do I tell what I have? The finish on the pool at the moment is light blue (I know...what car do you have? Doh..a yellow one!), not flaking, but simply wearing. Where it is worn, the surface is rough and in some places pitted (ie a few areas...maybe 9 or 10...have a hole in the surface maybe 2 or 3 mm deep and about 10cm x 10cm). The material looks and feels like concrete.
Can the chlorine rubber paint go straight over this? I guess I would use two coats (would I thin the first coat with something?)
And finally....how far does the paint go (considering the pool is 30ft x 15ft, I would guess I'd need about 8 5ltr cans?)
Thanks
Mick

We have used chorinated rubber paint on our concrete rendered pool. Two coats were applied and allowed to cure for at least two weeks.
The pool is now full of water, and the paint is starting to bubble and peel off.
Any ideas??
