Hi
We have a Polaris 360 Pool Cleaner that runs of the filter/pump system of the pool and when it has finished cleaning and we remove it, I then backwash and clean the filter before turning the pump back on however....
When the pump is turned back on, green, cloudy dirty water is fired out of the jets. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Thanks.
Hi,
This sounds like a classic case of backwashing, but not rinsing.
I will try not to tell you how to suck eggs, but this is a run down of a backwash procedure.
1. Turn any electronic/ automatic chemical dosing equipment off
2. Turn off any heating, and allow cooling for a few moments.
3. Turn off the pump, and close any relevant valves to allow you to clean the pump strainer basket. Make sure you have also removed any debris from the skimmer baskets.
4. Turn the filter's multiport valve to backwash.
5. Open any valves that you had to close to service the pump basket, and ensure the backwash line's valve is opened if one is installed, or roll out your backwash hose to the relevant drain point.
6. Turn on the pump, and run for 2 - 3 minutes, the sight glass on the multiport, or the clear filter lid, should go from mucky dirty water, to a clean normal colour. (Backwashing reverses the flow of water, so that the water goes in from the bottom of the filter, is then forced up through the filter sand, hopefully removing all the debris, and then down the backwash line to waste.
7. Turn off the pump, and turn the multiport valve handle to rinse.
8. Turn on the pump, and run for 20-30 second(rinse allows the water back through the sand from top to bottom, so flushing through the system, and generally removing the last dregs of debris out of the sand, this water goes to waste).
9. Turn off the pump, and turn the multiport handle back to filter.
10. Turn on the pump, and ensure you close the backwash line valve.
11. Turn on the heater.
12. Turn on any chemical controller.
N.B. 16/32 grade filter sand requires changing every 3 years as a general rule of thumb, filters generally take up to 24 hours to settle and slightly blind off, allowing the finer particles to be removed from the water. So don't over do your backwashes on a cloudy pool. A good exercise is to vac your pool to waste once a month to remove the finer particles that are too small for your sand filter to remove.
Hope this helps

I know I must have forgotten something, so come on what was it???????

Thanks for your reply and assistance. I will give it a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

It works perfect! No more cloudy water blown into the pool! Thanks!
(The only trouble is remembering to carry out those steps! - I have now printed them off, laminated them and stuck them by the filter!)
