please can you help i have been continuosly adding ph to increase the levels but cannot get them right the alkilinity and chorlrine are fine i use a bobbing dispenser for the chorlrine, i have also noticed that if i dont run my sand filter pump, every day it looks like patches of sandy colour on the surface which i wondered could be algae as when you sweep the bottom it comes of in plumes not a great amount and when i run the pump it clears and only comes back when the water has been stationary for a couple of days, it was shocked a few weeks ago because of this as i was not sure if it was algae or not . it is a round liner 15 foot metal framed pool, can any one help,

Dear All,
Let me start by apologising if anyone feels like they haven't recieved the level of response that they would have expected. We do try to respond to as many posts as possible but it is the summer season and we are extremely busy. Hopefully in our abscense, other members of the forum can occasionally help their fellow members with their own points of view.
pH or "potential hydrogen" is the measure of the acidity of any given source, in this case swimming pool water. pH is probably the most important chemical reading when dealing with water balance as it has many adverse effects if incorrect.
Swimming Pool water is best when slightly Alkali, between 7.4 and 7.6 ideally.
The common misconception is that Chlorine alone disinfects your pool water, when infact there is a hidden process which allows disinfection. Without going into too much detail, Chlorine reacts with the water to produce an acid which is harmless to the swimmer, but a very powerful disinfectant.
People having pH balance problems will generally find that the TA (Total Alkalinity) of their water is either too low or too high. The TA of the pool water effectively balances the pH. Too much either way and even adding a small amount of pH + or - will lead to a huge jump in results, often leaving the pool user confused and in most cases slightly annoyed.
In short, check your TA levels with a test kit/strip and make sure the level is within recommended guidlines. Once you have achieved this, you will find that balancing your pH will become very easy indeed.

James

thankyou for your reply but this does not help as my other tests are fine the clohrine and alkalinity are as they should any more ideas cheersa :(
Hi,
Ok let’s start by clarifying what Ok on chlorine level and TA are please.
When ever anyone comes in to our shops, and they are not sure exactly what their water is doing, they always say 'oh it's fine', please reply with your pool size, Ta & ph levels please, and I will let you know what you need to do exactly. As for your chlorine levels, obviously this will go up and down accordingly, just a small point to note, Chlorine tablets(which I assume you are using with your floating chemical dispenser) are low on Ph, so if you are always having to raise your ph, the culprit may be your tablets.
