Hi to all just a few queries on general pool maintainance and chemicals etc.
1) Are there any differences between using dips sticks and phenol red / DPD No1 or is it personal preference ?
2) If I wanted to use dip sticks which one would be adequate for testing PH and Free chlorine and possibly Total Alkalinity ? Also why such a price diffeence between the various ones ?
3) Why test for total alkalinity ? when Ph tells you if its too acid or alkaline ?
4) Do chemical go off or have shelf lives if kept in air tight containers dry and cool ?
5) What is the difference between :- Shock chlorine and multifunctional stabalised and stabalised ?
6) Is there any reason why I can not just shock treat the pool pending test results approx 24 - 48hrs before use and possibly some in between rather than regular dose the pool even when not in use as it seems a waste of chemicals during the cooler weeks when its not in use. ?
7) I wash the filters cartridges off in clean water once a day when the pool is in use as the filter is on virtually 24/7. This can make the cartridge last a whole season rather than the over protective sales picth that you must change them every 2 weeks. I have even used various kitchen descalers and cleaners to aid the cleaning process with good results. So what can the special cleaning chemicals do that kitchen chemicals can not ? (obviously after treatment they are well washed in clean water)
8) Are there any better manufactures names than others as I have noticed quite a price difference between various chlorines on this site. If so what are the advantages by paying more ?
Many thanks in advance from MADMAN :D
